Top 10 Most Expensive Overs in IPL History

The IPL has witnessed bowlers being clobbered for 30 or more runs in a single over on numerous occasions. Let’s take a look at the 10 most expensive overs bowled in IPL history. One over in IPL, however, stands out as particularly calamitous.

1. 37 Runs – Chris Gayle off Prasanth Parameswaran in 2011

In an IPL 2011 match between Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Royal Challengers Bangalore, Chris Gayle smashed 37 runs off Prasanth Parameswaran’s over. Gayle hit 6, 6nb, 4, 4, 6, 6, 4 in that over, with his individual contribution being 36 runs. This remains the joint highest runs scored in a single over in IPL history. It was an expensive over in IPL history.

2. 37 Runs – Ravindra Jadeja off Harshal Patel in 2021, highest runs in one over in IPL history

Ten years after Gayle’s amazing performance, Ravindra Jadeja, who is good at both batting and bowling, matched the record by hitting 37 runs in one over off Harshal Patel in 2021. Jadeja hit 6, 6 (which was a no-ball), 6, 2, 6, and 4 in that over, scoring 36 runs all by himself.

3. 35 Runs – Pat Cummins off Daniel Sams in 2022

4. 33 Runs – Suresh Raina off Parvinder Awana in 2014

Playing for CSK against KXIP in 2014, Suresh Raina carted 32 runs off Awana’s bowling in the 20th over, including a no-ball. He hit 6, 6, 4, 4, 4nb, 4, 4 in that eventful over.

5. 31 Runs – Chris Gayle and Manoj Tiwary off Ravi Bopara in 2013

In probably the most memorable 30-run over, Rahul Tewatia hit Cottrell for 5 sixes – 6, 6, 6, 6, 0, 6 – to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat for RR against KXIP in 2020.

Factors Behind Expensive Overs in IPL

Several factors can be attributed to bowlers conceding so many runs in a single over in the IPL:

  • The T20 format inherently favors batsmen, with field restrictions in place for first 6 overs.
  • Quality of bowling can be inconsistent, with even good bowlers having off days.
  • Batting lineups are stacked with power hitters capable of clearing boundaries frequently.
  • Bowlers succumbing under pressure of bowling at death overs.
  • Short boundaries at some venues making it easier for batsmen to hit sixes.
  • Levels of dew making gripping and bowling difficult for bowlers.
  • Quality batsmen like Gayle, Raina, Kohli etc. who can capitalize on loose balls.

Impact of Conceding 30+ Runs in an Over

Conceding over 30 runs in a T20 over can completely change the complexion of the match within minutes. Some of the outcomes of such expensive overs are:

  • Momentum shifts suddenly in favor of batting team.
  • Run rate shoots up, creating huge pressure on bowlers.
  • Bowler loses confidence for upcoming overs, chances of repeating mistakes increase.
  • Fielding captain has to rethink bowling strategies instantly.
  • Low totals get chased down rapidly, matches end abruptly.
  • Bowlers’ career economy rates get affected.

So in most cases, 30+ run overs end up being match-turning or match-defining events in the IPL. The bowlers who bowl these expensive overs have to face a lot of flak and their confidence takes a big hit.

The carnage unleashed by batsmen in the shortest format of cricket is evident when we look at the most expensive overs in IPL history. While T20 cricket is loaded in favor of batsmen anyway, factors like strength of batting lineups, power hitters in form, small grounds etc. in IPL makes life very difficult for bowlers.

Conceding 30+ runs in an over is every bowler’s nightmare and it takes immense mental strength and resilience to come back after such beating. Although bowlers have fought back after initial struggles in IPL, these expensive overs are certainly tough to live down for any bowler.
