The 9th edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will take place from June 2nd to June 29th, 2024. In this tournament, the 20 best teams from around the world will compete for the championship trophy. T20I cricket is one of the shortest formats of the game, with each team playing a maximum of 20 overs. Despite the limited number of overs, scores have been getting very high in recent years.

Gone are the days when scores of over 200 or even 250 were only seen in ODI cricket. Recently, fans have witnessed some of the highest scores in T20 matches, especially in popular leagues like the Indian Premier League (IPL). In the 2024 IPL, Sunrisers Hyderabad scored 287 for 3 against RCB, making it the second-highest team total in T20 history.

1.Sri Lanka 260/6 vs Kenya – 2007

Sri Lanka holds the record for the highest team score in T20 World Cup history. They scored 260 runs for the loss of 6 wickets against Kenya in the 2007 edition of the tournament. No team has come close to breaking Sri Lanka’s record since the T20 World Cup began.

2.South Africa 211/5 vs Scotland – 2009

South Africa is ranked fifth for the highest scores in T20 World Cup history. During the 2009 T20 World Cup, they scored 211 runs for the loss of 5 wickets against Scotland at the Oval. In reply, Scotland managed to score only 81 runs before their entire team was out in just 15.4 overs.

3.South Africa 229/4 vs England – 2016

The third highest scoring team in the T20 World Cup is England, who scored a massive 229 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. Despite setting such a big target, England managed to defeat South Africa in the T20 World Cup.

4.England 230/8 vs South Africa – 2016

Following is the current champion, England, who scored a massive 230 runs for the loss of 8 wickets against South Africa in 2016. England successfully chased down South Africa’s target of 230 runs in 19.4 overs at Wankhede Stadium. Credit goes to England’s middle-order batsman Joe Root, who scored 83 runs off 44 balls.

5.India 218/4 vs England – 2007

Everyone remembers Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh for hitting six 6s in one over off Stuart Broad, helping India reach a total of 218 runs. This is the fourth highest team score in T20 World Cup history. In the 2007 edition, India beat England by 18 runs in Durban.

At number six, India leads again with a score of 210/2 against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi in 2010. India won the group stage match by 66 runs against Afghanistan.

The seventh and eighth positions are both held by South Africa for their high-scoring matches in the 2024 T20 World Cup. In 2016, South Africa scored 209/5 against Afghanistan at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. They also scored 208/2 against West Indies in Johannesburg in 2007, which is the fourth highest score for South Africa in T20 World Cup history.

The ninth and tenth positions in the top 10 highest team scores in T20 World Cup history are held by the West Indies. West Indies scored 205/6 against South Africa in 2007 and 205/4 against Australia in 2012.

In recent years, there have been many high-scoring T20 matches. However, scoring big in the T20 World Cup, one of the biggest cricket events held every two years, is not easy. It will be interesting to see which team will break one of the previous highest scores in the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Championship.
