The Beginning

Not many people know exactly what they want to do when they’re young, but Virat Kohli was different. He showed an interest in cricket as early as three years old. In 1998, when he was nine, his father, Prem Kohli, enrolled him in the West Delhi Cricket Academy.

Just two weeks into his training, his coach, Raj Kumar Sharma, noticed Kohli’s exceptional talent. At the same time, Kohli began playing matches at the Sumeet Dogra Academy in Delhi.

In 2002-2003, Raj Kumar Sharma invited Ashish Nehra to watch a Polly Umrigar Trophy match, which further inspired Kohli. Before becoming one of the greatest run-scorers, Kohli played for Delhi’s Under-15 team.

He got his first taste of real success when he was chosen as the captain of India’s U-19 World Cup team. He led the team to victory, lifting the 2008 Under-19 World Cup. Now, in his 15th year of international cricket, Kohli is the second-highest century-maker in the history of the game.
